BIRTH AND GROWTH OF
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE COMMERCE
E – Commerce or
electronic commerce has made the lives
of several people better. It is one of
the revolutionary technologies of the
silicon world. This makes us wonder,
how, when and where e - commerce
started. The surprising fact that is not
known by many people is that e –
commerce started even before computers
came in to existence and then slowly,
but steadily, it became a multi –
billion dollar business industry. By
tracing the evolution of e – commerce,
we can determine the trends and
technologies that will come up in the
future. Let us go through the important
events which led to the creation and
boom of e – commerce, briefly.
In 1984, through “ASC
X12”, electronic data interchange or EDI
was standardized. This assured the
companies and the customers that
transactions will be completed reliably.
In the year 1992, retail products were
being sold online to consumers by a
company called CompuServe. This was the
beginning of the great revolution, which
brought with it convenience for people
because they could purchase things by
sitting in front of their computer which
created a more trendy and easier
lifestyle. In 1994, Netscape arrived.
Its design was extremely user friendly
and allowed its users to browse through
the internet using just one browser.
Also, it was highly secure because it
had the earlier version of Secure Socket
Layer or SSL which protected the
information from being read by
unnecessary people.
So that day was when fun
was just a click away. In 1995, the
current biggies in the e – commerce
industry, Amazon.com and eBay.com, were
launched. It was a prominent reason why
e – commerce industry grew so much in so
less time. Acting like a catalyst was
the introduction of Digital Subscriber
Line or DSL which was introduced in
1998. It provided fast and always on net
service to customers. By the year 1999,
business through the internet had
reached the 20 billion dollar mark.
Then, in the year 2000, the “Internet
Tax Moratorium” got extended by the
government of the United States till
2005. Most people enjoy their shopping
experience on the internet because they
are not pestered by the sales people.
Today, it’s only the
editorial websites that are not getting
good profits from e – commerce. On the
other hand, Amazon.com received the
honour of being “the earth’s biggest
book store” that has made more than a
billion dollars by selling books. This
was done in just ten weeks of a holiday
season. The airline industry is making
over twenty billion dollars each year in
ticket sales. Thus, e – commerce has
become a really big industry in just a
decade or so, living up to the
expectations of several people.
Today, e – commerce has
become a necessity from a luxury. E –
Commerce is required to stay afloat in
the cut throat competition that exists
in every industry. E – Commerce has
increased the sales and revenues of
several businesses, thereby increasing
the profits of the company.
